‘Five Bears’ shortlisted for The English Association 4-11 Picture Book Awards 2023

⭐️ AWARD NEWS! ⭐️
My book ‘Five Bears’ has been shortlisted for The English Assiciation 4-11 Picture Book Awards 2023.

This is what the judges said:
“Five Bears by Catherine Rayner (Macmillan Publishers International)

One bear is walking through a forest when he comes across another bear. At first, he is suspicious of this different bear but nevertheless they wander along, ‘…thinking different thoughts, and looking in different directions.’ Travelling on, they meet two more bears and then finally ‘Stuck Bear’ who wants to be left alone despite being clearly in need of help. However, by now the other bears are, ‘…starting to think similar thoughts’ and become united in their determination to rescue Stuck Bear. Themes of similarity, difference and friendship come together in this delightful tale about the things that unite, rather than separate us. The differences between the bears are demonstrated in the visuals but also in their actions, which gradually shift as friendships form. Word and image combine subtly to demonstrate the social and emotional journey the bears go on, making this a great addition to any Key Stage 1 classroom.”

The winner will be announced in May. I'm thrilled to be on this wonderful shortlist!
